Run, forest, run!

Greetings from Waterbury, the origin of the first Mickey Mouse watch.  I hope all is well, warm, and whimsical.  Lately, it's been cooling down a bit more to the point where it's sweater weather. The leaves are a good indication of the recent change in weather. I've enjoyed being able to go on forest runs and get away from all the stresses and worries. There are pictures below of Elder Barbee and I.  Yesterday was zone conference and there were a few things that I learned. I mostly want to focus on obedience. Some may not know, but the Massachusetts Boston Mission is known for having the most standards enforced. Some may know, that growing up, I wasn't necessarily the best at following rules.  The elder that spoke about obedience has a similar disposicion. I learned something very interesting and important.  God gives us commandments/standards/rules whatever you call it, to prepare us for future choices. Think about it, it's all over the scriptures. Abraham, Mos...

The end of an era

Good afternoon,  Got some bittersweet news on Saturday. I'm heading to Waterbury, CT. Having been in Revere for 5 1/2 months, I've had 3 companions, 4 different roommates, and who knows how many rolls of toilet paper I've gone through. It's been a good time here but quite frankly, I could really use a change of environment.  We found an interesting statistic this last week. In total, we set up 36 lessons with friends and members. Of all those, only 6 answered. I guess you could say it was one of those weeks. Outside of the work, we have lots of fun here in the 5 elder apartment. Playing with Kendamas, rubiks cubes, and watching The Chosen, helps make for a good decompression after the day.  I've been reading a book series called  The Great and the Terrible.  In this series, it talks a lot about the last days and what it might be like for Latter-day Saints. Even though it isn't canonized, there are some REALLY good lessons to learn from it. One thing I found is t...

One year

Good afternoon!  As you might know, I left for my mission a year ago on Friday. It's really something just how quick time goes by. It's funny looking at photos/videos of just how different I look from when I began this journey.  I want to focus my email on a more sensitive topic. I feel it should be talked about more often: Choose to stay.  There was a recent experience that I went through that made me reflect on this topic. Just last night, we were all sitting on the balcony talking together. Suddenly, we heard a woman scream and run out from the apartment complex towards the road. She was quickly followed a man in a hoodie. We decided to run down and see what was going on. We asked if everything was alright, but the girl told us to leave her alone. We confronted the man, and he said she was on Suicide Watch. We gave them some space, called 911, and waited there for help to arrive. In short, the police and paramedics showed up, and no one got hurt.  As I reflected o...

Colombian cowboy abducted by aliens

Cómo estamos? Good afternoon!  Hope you all had a sputirutally enlightening and awakening weekend.  This week we found a new service opportunity in East Boston at the local community soup kitchen. It was SOOO nice to talk to all the Hispanics that were there volunteering.  As the morning grew to afternoon, were lines going up the street in both directions. Things started to get a little "excited" so we had to keep people in line and prevent any kind of tussle.  Wednesday night we began teaching a friend named Juan. He's a good guy, has lots of faith, and very interesting experience. We got through the small talk and had already introduced ourselves and the name of the church. After we had shared a few principles, we were wrapping up the lesson. Elder Chalk, being from Texas, proudly presented that he was a cowboy. Juan instantly lit up and said "Me too! I lived on a farm in Colombia!". We all laughed a little and didn't think much of it until he got all seri...
